the auld kirk the auld kirk is a fine example of an early victorian scottish free church building that is set in the heart of royal deeside, within the cairngorms national park. constructed from local granite, the auld kirk sits on the western edge of the historic village of ballater, looking onto craig en darroch (the hill of oaks), on the road towards braemar. the auld kirk houses a comfortable and stylish coffee lounge that is popular wtih the local population and visitors alike. a great place to stop for a morning coffee, meet friends for a light lunch or linger over an indulgent afternoon tea. the auld kirk also offers comfortable accommodation with en-suite facilities. we have 4 well appointed guest bedrooms all situated on the first floor of the building. an ideal place to stay for a quick stopover or a short stay to explore the beautiful cairngorms national park. accommodation the coffee lounge the coffee lounge at the auld kirk offers an informal and relaxed space for customers to enjoy a small but daily changing offering of sweet, savoury pastries, freshly baked filled rolls, delicious cakes and desserts. we also offer a freshly made soup and a hot dish of the day at lunchtimes. we have two seating areas within the coffee lounge and outdoor seating is available on the terrace. this means we are able to accommodate dogs whatever the weather along with their well behaved owners. we of course serve tea and cake throughout the day but for those who want to make afternoon tea a little more special we serve a formal but contemporary afternoon tea in the former side chapel lounge between 2pm and 4pm. our afternoon teas are very popular and therefore must be booked in advance sample afternoon tea menu cocktail sandwiches poached salmon, watercress and lemon mayonnaise in crois bread beef pastrami with dill pickle, horseradish sour cream in seeded baguette savoury pastries mini pork and herb pastry roll bacon, cheese and chilli barquette sweet pastries three apple and custard tart mini vanilla scone with jam and whipped cream desserts raspberry mousse topped with brandied raspberries rich chocolate tort price - £18.50 or £21.50 with prosecco (prices per person) accommodation accommodation we now offer our accommodation on a room only basis. this enables us to offer the same level of comfort and quality at a significantly lower price and means that the considerable numbers of guests who need a very early start or a long lie in, and those that just don’t do breakfast, are not paying for something they don’t receive. if you do prefer to eat before you leave us, we open our coffee lounge an hour earlier for residents (at 9am) and always have a variety of freshly prepared breakfast items available in addition to our usual coffee lounge pastries, bakes and cakes. we offer 6 en-suite letting rooms all situated on the first floor, accessed from the entrance hallway via a wide staircase. our rooms consist of 4 king size and 2 twin rooms. there are three double bedded rooms and one twin bedded room – the twin beds can also be linked to form double bedded accommodation if required. the bedrooms are fitted with smart contemporary shower rooms. one double room is available with a bath. all rooms have wireless internet access to enable use of your own internet device. complementary beverage making facilities, local still and sparkling mineral water, televisions, ironing equipment, hair driers and scottish soap company toiletries are to be found in all rooms. check in times. check in is usually between 2.30pm and 6.30pm, during which time a duty manager is here to welcome you to the kirk and provide any assistance or information you may need. guests are required to check out by 10.30am on the day of departure. check in before 2.30pm or after 6.30pm will be accommodated wherever possible, but this must be by prior arrangement. guest lounge. the coffee shop servery and bar area closes at 5pm but the comfortable ground floor lounge situated in the former side chapel remains open for resident guests use. blending the old with the new, this lounge provides a stylish and interesting space in which to relax with a good book, plan your next castle visit or recover from a day’s hill walking. an external terrace area is also available for guests to make the most of the fine scottish weather – umbrellas can be found in the porch. packed lunches. residents planning a day in the depths of glentannar or a hike up lochnagar may need to take a packed lunch. we can easily make up a packed lunch from the items available in the coffee lounge. we will be happy to discuss your personal requirements. dogs . we are pleased to welcome well behaved dogs at the auld kirk. several good dog walking routes are available in the immediate vicinity of the kirk and in every direction around the village. please bring your own dog bedding and we would ask that guests do not lock unattended dogs in their rooms. dogs are also welcome in the café and lounge areas providing this does not disturb other customers. we do not make any additional charge for dogs unless of course your dogs was to damage furnishing or fittings or cause extra cleaning. children . we regret that the guest bedrooms at auld kirk are not suitable for children under the age of 12 years. tariff double or twin room -
